Girls in science: a call for change
As we mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, it’s more than just recognizing gender gaps in STEM fields—it’s a call to action. This year's UNESCO theme, 'Closing the Gender Gap in Science: Accelerating Action,' urges us to break down barriers and foster a more inclusive scientific community.
In the world of STEM, where global economies rely heavily, only 33.3% of researchers are female, and women make up just 35% in STEM studies. Persistent gender stereotypes continue to limit the educational and career choices for girls in STEM. This International Day serves as a rallying cry to dismantle these barriers and champion diversity.
At Constructor Knowledge, our commitment is simple: unlock the power of education and spotlight the outstanding contributions of bright minds. Today, as we celebrate the achievements of women and girls in science, we turn our attention to the stories of two remarkable women, Anne L’Huillier and Katalin Karikó, who challenge stereotypes and inspire a future where every girl's potential is recognized.
Anne L’Huillier, a distinguished French physicist, earned global recognition for her groundbreaking work in attosecond physics, ultimately becoming the fifth woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2023. Her pioneering research focuses on attosecond pulses of light and their applications in understanding ultrafast electron dynamics, contributing significantly to advancements in condensed matter physics.
Similarly, Katalin Karikó, a Hungarian-born biochemist, reshaped the landscape of RNA therapeutics, driving the development of the first mRNA vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, Karikó's journey from studying antiviral activity in Hungary to spearheading ground-breaking RNA research in the United States exemplifies the transformative power of scientific dedication.
At Constructor Knowledge, we believe in everyone’s potential. Through our entities, Constructor Institute of Technology, Constructor University, Constructor Academy, our mission is to pave the way for aspiring minds.
We invite you to share your stories and join us in celebrating the achievements of women in science. Anne L’Huillier and Katalin Karikó's stories stand as powerful examples, inspiring the next generation to pursue their dreams in the evolving world of science.
