What to expect from Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 2024

AI In 2024

2023 was a big year for Artificial Intelligence, so big that AI was named the word of the year by Collins. From helping us discover over 2 million materials previously unknown to science to breakthroughs in the ability of AI to recognize and analyze visual data, AI software is rapidly transforming our world, and this trend is only going to accelerate this year. To help you understand where AI is heading, we’ve curated some of the main trends to expect:

Generative AI: Generative AI (GenAI) models are trained on massive amounts of data, and they are able to learn patterns in the data and use those patterns to generate new outputs – including creative content, like film scripts, computer code, musical pieces, and email. While generative AI won’t replace artists anytime soon, it dramatically speeds up the creative process by generating images and text, editing them, as well as fact- and grammar-checking texts. These tools offer the potential to automate tasks, reduce costs, and boost productivity, making their widespread availability potentially the most disruptive trend of the coming decade.

Quantum AI: The marriage of quantum computing and AI, known as quantum AI, is a union made in tech heaven: quantum computers can provide the computational power to train and run complex AI models, while AI algorithms can optimize and utilize quantum resources efficiently. This convergence of emergent technologies has the potential to revolutionize areas as different as financial modeling, risk assessment, drug discovery and development. Quantum AI could play a crucial role in achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), the ability of a machine to perform any intellectual task that a human can, and a major goal for many of the AI industry’s key players.

Open source AI: The 2023’s generative AI boom was mostly driven by the proprietary models of OpenAI. However, many organizations are now adopting open-source models, such as GPT-J since open-source models are more transparent, flexible, customizable, and cost-effective than proprietary models. With 85% of enterprises incorporating open-source AI models into their tech stacks, according to Forrester, it certainly seems like the future is bright for open-source AI solutions.

AI jobs: In the past few years, the adoption of AI has permeated many industries and job fields leading not only to a rise in AI upskilling but also to the emergence of new AI-specific jobs. In 2024, we can expect even more AI jobs to gain prominence. Some examples of the new job titles we might expect to see in the future are: AI Product Manager, AI Engineer, AI Ethicist and AI Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) Designer.

AI coding: According to Gartner, by 2028, three out of four enterprise software engineers will use AI helpers to write code, which will be a dramatic rise from 2023, when just one out of every ten software engineers used AI helpers. Clearly, in 2024 and beyond, using AI coding tools will be a standard practice, and the software engineers and the companies who employ them who don’t embrace them in time will fall behind their peers and competitors.

AI ethics and regulation: The need to create ethical frameworks for the fair use of AI will become increasingly more important in 2024. As the recently agreed EU AI Act signals, governments have become more willing to intervene to ensure that companies in the field are creating trustworthy and transparent AI systems with a focus on fairness, bias, and responsible data handling. 2024 could also see the implementation of sector-specific regulations – like in the finance sector – to ensure the ethical deployment and use of AI within particular sectors.

The AI spotlight is shining bright, and only likely to get brighter in 2024. At Constructor, we believe AI, along with quantum computing and advanced materials, are transformational technologies that will soon be as integral to our lives as email, smartphones, and streaming once were. More importantly, they hold the key to a better future.
